All four solutions find vulnerable components in dependencies, but they solve different tasks. OWASP Dependency-Track is a free component inventory based on SBOMs, Snyk is a developer-oriented tool with automatic fixes, Sonatype Lifecycle is policy and risk management at organisational scale, and CodeScoring is a Russian secure development platform. Choose based on whether you need inventory, developer convenience, or a unified policy with protection against malicious packages.
Software composition analysis (SCA) has become a mandatory part of AppSec, because most of the code in modern applications is third-party libraries. For what SCA is and how it differs from SAST, see the article “SAST, DAST, SCA and MAST”. Here is a neutral comparison of four solutions based on their websites and documentation. We are the Sonatype distributor in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, so we state this upfront; the strengths of the other solutions are listed honestly.
What to compare in SCA solutions
- Vulnerability database: where the data comes from and how enriched it is (not just NVD).
- Malicious package protection: not only known CVEs, but also compromised and substituted packages.
- Prioritisation: reachability of the vulnerable code, availability of a fix, risk of breakage on upgrade.
- Policies and build blocking: whether the solution can stop a build according to rules.
- SBOM: generation and import in standard formats.
- Deployment: cloud, your own environment, closed network.
- Licence risks: control over component licences.
Sonatype Lifecycle
The product page lists 18 default policies and more than 30 configurable conditions; policies can be tied to the application type, legal requirements and risk profile. Lifecycle generates and imports SBOMs and keeps them up to date, uses reachability analysis combined with data on breaking changes and available updates for prioritisation, and integrates with GitHub, GitLab Ultimate and Azure DevOps. It claims support for more than 20 languages and package formats.
Protection against malicious packages is provided by a separate product, Sonatype Firewall. It blocks malicious components at download, quarantines suspicious ones, and works in cloud, on-premise and air-gapped configurations. Firewall is included in Nexus Repository Pro+ and Enterprise.
- Strengths: organisation-wide policies and governance, integration with the Nexus artifact repository, deployment options up to a closed network.
- Limitations: the set of modules has to be chosen carefully; price on request.

Snyk
Snyk Open Source finds vulnerabilities in direct and transitive dependencies, helps set priorities, and supports reporting and licence checks against policies. Its distinctive feature is automatic fix requests (fix pull/merge requests) directly in the repository. The product is used at all stages of the development lifecycle and is built around developer experience. The vendor’s pricing page lists a free plan; paid plans and enterprise terms differ by the number of developers. Limits quoted in third-party reviews vary, so check the vendor’s current pricing page.
- Strengths: convenience for developers, automatic fixes, a free start.
- Limitations: cloud model; clarify local deployment options. Delivery and payment terms for countries in the region need to be clarified separately.
OWASP Dependency-Track
An OWASP project platform for tracking software components, finding vulnerabilities and applying policies across the whole supply chain. It is licensed under Apache-2.0 and works with SBOMs in the CycloneDX format, which are uploaded via the REST API, CI plugins or the web interface. The listed vulnerability sources include NVD, Sonatype OSS Index, GitHub Advisories, Snyk and OSV; EPSS is used for prioritisation. It has an expression-based policy engine that can stop builds, continuous re-analysis as new vulnerabilities appear, and notifications via webhooks, chat and email. Version 5 works only with PostgreSQL and adds horizontal scaling; upgrading from 4.x requires a migration.
- Strengths: free, open source, full control, and works very well as an SBOM repository.
- Limitations: you deploy, update and maintain the platform yourself; the SBOM has to be generated with separate tools; there is no separate layer of protection against malicious packages and no commercial support.
CodeScoring
A Russian secure development platform. According to its website, it includes five modules: Save, OSA, SCA, Secrets and TQI. OSA filters the components that enter the organisation’s perimeter by risk and protects against malicious and compromised packages. Save is an artifact repository with support for popular formats, role-based access, an audit log and Kubernetes installation, and checks components before they are used in a build. Details of the SCA module itself, its deployment and its status in Russian registries are not given on the main page; ask the vendor.
- Strengths: a single platform with an artifact repository, component filtering, and secret detection.
- Limitations: a Russian vendor; delivery and support terms for Central Asian countries need to be clarified separately.
Comparison by criteria
- Model: Sonatype — commercial, with cloud, on-premise and air-gapped options (for Firewall); Snyk — commercial with a free tier; Dependency-Track — open source; CodeScoring — commercial.
- Prioritisation: Sonatype — reachability plus update data; Dependency-Track — EPSS and policies; Snyk — prioritisation and reports; CodeScoring — per the vendor’s description, clarify with the vendor.
- Malicious packages: Sonatype Firewall and the OSA module of CodeScoring; according to its description, Dependency-Track has no such function.
- SBOM: Sonatype — generation and import; Dependency-Track — a central CycloneDX repository; for more on SBOMs see “What Is an SBOM”.
- Costs: Dependency-Track — no licence cost, but maintenance costs; the others are priced on request or per the vendor’s plans.
How to choose
- A small team that needs quick component tracking and an SBOM — start with Dependency-Track.
- Developers need fixes created automatically — Snyk.
- You need unified policies, blocking of malicious packages at repository entry, and work in a closed network — Sonatype Lifecycle with Firewall and Nexus Repository.
- A Russian vendor and a secure development platform are the priority — CodeScoring.
These options do not exclude one another: many teams combine an open tool for inventory with a commercial one for policies. On the economics of this choice, read “Open-Source or Commercial AppSec Tools”, and for checking the options on your own projects, see “How to Run a SAST and SCA Pilot in 30 Days”.
Questions for vendors before the pilot
To keep the comparison concrete, ask every candidate the same set of questions. Which package ecosystems are supported (Maven, npm, PyPI, NuGet, Go, and the others you use)? How are transitive dependencies determined: from manifests or from the build result? Where does the vulnerability data come from, and how quickly do new records appear? Which SBOM formats are supported on input and output? How does the product work without internet access, and how are database updates delivered? Which metrics and reports are available for management?
Verify the answers on your own projects. Take two or three applications with different package managers and compare how many components each tool found and whether the lists match. Discrepancies in dependency lists are the clearest indicator of SCA quality.
Do not forget licence risks. Beyond vulnerabilities, SCA should show which licences the components carry and whether they conflict with your product’s distribution model. For banks and software vendors this is a separate matter for lawyers, and it should be part of the pilot criteria on a par with vulnerability detection accuracy.
